I’ll be totally upfront with you that over the years I have been overweight. I have also lost that weight and became what society deems a”normal weight”. But what really bothers me, is the fact that we constantly are being bombarded with information about how we are supposed to look and how we are supposed to deal with our bodies.

You know, there’s more regular people in this world than there are perfect people in this world. I use the term “perfect” loosely, because the ones that consider themselves perfect, are the supermodels and celebrities for the most part. The perfect body people rarely eat any food and they also work out several hours a day. Now honestly, I do not have any issues with people exercising and eating right.

But let’s be frank here, eating right and exercising several hours a day is not realistic for most people. I have a family just like a lot of people do and I work a full-time job. I’m self-employed, but it’s still a full-time job. I really do not know how I would fit in several hours a day of exercise and eating several small meals a day to eat right. Also, have you noticed that the people who DO look good, eat well and exercise several hours a day are usually single and do not have kids? Just an observation…

I just don’t see that it is realistic for a lot of people. Because, by the time you’re done with work, and take care of chores around the house, spent time with your children and squeezed in eating dinner as well, there really is no time left to do any exercising for several hours and to eat several small meals for the day.

You’ve heard the hype. Many products say that they can help you lose weight and there are many methods that people use. One of the most popular ways to lose weight was with hypnosis many years ago.

Today this is still a way that some people use to get rid of extra pounds but you might ask yourself, “Does this really work?” The answers are varied and it seems that it depends on the individual and what they want to accomplish.

According to the Mayo Clinic it really depends on the individual. There have been many studies done that show that there is some help for obesity from hypnosis but they have really been modest results. The challenge is that the studies have not been scientifically done so there is no real way to tell whether this can work.

However, the Mayo Clinic suggests that there is enough evidence to show that hypnosis can be helpful. The reason it can help is because hypnosis puts an individual into a state of relaxation that also provides heightened awareness. By doing this they are also able to be more focused on suggestions and behavior change.

If an individual looks at hypnosis as one method towards their weight loss it can be beneficial. It is not something that is a substitute for other methods. Experts say that hypnosis combined with better eating and a change in lifestyle can lead anyone towards their goal.

How Does Hypnosis Work?

Many people think that hypnosis is an absolute cure to stop them from doing certain behaviors. They think that they will go to sleep, get some suggestions and then automatically (and miraculously) lose weight. This is not the case. The hypnotist will use relaxation techniques to get an individual into a very relaxed state.

The challenge is that the individual can fight the hypnosis and never get to the relaxed state where they need to go. Once there however, they can work on issues around their weight that might help them when they are out of their heightened state.

The hypnotherapist will also use relaxation tapes and may lend one to the individual to use when they are not in session. These tapes will be used for self-hypnosis and can add to the overall treatment.

Once an individual is in a very relaxed state the hypnotherapist will give them instructions to see themselves as thin or at their goal weight. They will use visualization techniques and suggestions during the course of the therapy to help the individual get into the frame of mind to keep moving on their weight loss plan.

But Does It Work For Everyone?

Although hypnosis can work for many people it is not something that is a cure all. According to Dr. David Katz, a professor at Yale University, hypnosis can make a contribution to weight loss but it’s not the only thing someone should do (Source: ABC News).

Hypnosis cannot act as the magic bullet for weight loss and it isn’t a replacement for common sense. It doesn’t work for people who are resistant to this method because they are too hypersensitive to let themselves relax enough to be hypnotized.

Some people are afraid of hypnotism which is another reason why it would not work. It is important to note that this method is also a type of psychotherapy and as such it should be done by a health care provider who is credentialed in this method. There are a lot of people who are doing hypnosis who are not licenses or credentialed in the process.

Usually it is because they think that they are safe to go back to the way they used to eat and they may slack off in exercise. The problem with this thinking is that it is a sure way to get back to the same weight problem they had in the past.

Since this is a problem for many people you might want to know what you can do to keep the weight off. This is often called the maintenance phase of weight loss. What most people do not know is that the maintenance of weight loss is much like the weight loss itself. You still will need to maintain proper nutrition and exercise. This is often the challenge.

Ways to Keep Going

Once you have started a regular exercise program you can add more than one type of exercise to your program. This will stop you from getting bored. Many people start out with walking and then add swimming or biking so they have a change of pace. As your body becomes stronger you will be able to try different things to see what you like to do.

This is also a time to assess your goals. You had weight loss goals so you can decide on other goals at this time. Create a network of people. If you don’t have a network of people that you can talk to and have fun with start getting out and meeting people. Have you ever heard the expression, a watched pot never boils? Believe it or not, your weight is pretty much the same idea. Give me a second to explain to you why I say this. From the watched pot expression you’ll glean two facts. The first fact being that if you’re watching a pot it just doesn’t boil. The second, the moment you turn your back on it, it will boil. Your weight is exactly the same. Do you notice that all of a sudden one day that your 30 pounds overweight? How did that happen?

Your body can easily gain 10 to 15 pounds before you start seeing the effects of that extra weight. You may notice that your pants get a little tighter, or your shirts don’t fit as nicely. But believe it or not, that extra 10 or 15 pounds is a warning sign. You’re well on your way to gaining 30, 40 or 50 extra pounds! The scary thing is that extra 10 pounds crept up on you. This can easily happen, simply because of the fact that it takes time to gain weight. Also if you’re not monitoring your weight then you have no idea when you’ve gained one extra pound. So make it a priority for you to weigh yourself on a regular basis. I would recommend that you jump on the scale at least once or twice per week.

If you’re pretty close to your ideal weight already, jumping on scale more often is not intuitive. This is simple because of the fact that you can gain or lose a couple pounds depending on how much food is sitting in my stomach. What you’re looking for is your way to trend up or down. Even when you’re in a weight-loss program, it is not unusual for your weight to jump up or down over time. You’re always looking for the longer-term trend on your weight to determine whether or not you are losing or gaining weight. Now if you are actually able to catch your weight gain before it becomes serious it’s very easy to adjust your diet to compensate for these extra couple pounds. But if you gain the next 10, 15 or 20 pounds it starts to become a little more serious. It won’t be life-threatening but it will be more of a pain to lose.

What is really scary is a situation that I put myself into. By the time I started to get a hold of my weight I probably gained an extra 60 pounds. Knowing what I know about obesity, this extra weight with my age and sex is a definite health risk. Now I have the joy of trying to lose all this extra weight. Fortunately I do keep track my weight now and I can see when I gained or lost weight. Funny, as soon as I started watching my weight on a regular basis I noticed my eating was reduced as well as I am losing weight. So remember that your weight is like a watched pot that never boils.
